7 Easy Tips to Treat Winter Skin

When you look in the mirror, are you singing the winter blues?

What do you see when you look in the mirror this winter?  If you are living in the Northeast like myself, chances are you are looking at a face that is dry, dehydrated and pale.

The one thing I hate more than the bitter cold days outside is the drying heat that  is on the inside that makes my skin feel and look like a dried up prune!

If this is you, take heart.

Here are 7 easy steps to teat winter skin that  you can do right now that will help cure your dry skin’s winter blues.

1.  Purchase and use a humidifier.  Set it to around 60%, a level that should be sufficient for the moisture of the top layer of skin.

2.  Limit your shower time.  Hot water and long showers “remove oils rom your skin” according to the Mayo Clinic.

3.  After you shower, pat your skin dry, do not rub.  Follow up with a moisturizer right away to trap in moisture.

4.  Exfoliate your skin twice a week.  Be careful not to over exfoliate.  Use gentle circular motions, do not rub.  Gently removing surface dry flaky skin cells will not only help your skin look smoother and softer, it will also allow ingredients that add moisturizers penetrate deeper into the skin.

5.  Eat good fats.  Yes, eating fat is good for your skin!  Foods, like salmon, avocados, walnuts, and olive oil contain fatty acids that keep the skin moist from the inside out

6.    Cover up when going outside.  Just like the sun can damage our skin in the summertime, winter weather can damage our skin if we don’t cover up.  Cover up all exposed skin.  Get into the habit of wearing your hat, gloves and scarfs.

7.   Use a moisturizing mask several times during the week for extra moisture to the skin.

My favorite?  Here at the studio we offer and use Amadi’s Oxygen mask. I apply a thin layer before going to bed and rinse off in the morning.  My skin looks and feels amazing.  Yes, even in the dead of winter!
